I have been a consumer of elder care services for the past five (5) years. I also became a secondary victim of Elder Exploitation and Elder Fraud during this time. I was advised by my Elder Law Attorney to take out a loan in my personal name and to mortgage my personal home in order to fund my Father’s long term care. I followed that legal advice, with the understanding that I would be repaid when Dad’s property in California was sold. This was following the theft of Dad’s personal assets and the embezzlement of his cash resources by family members in California. I was forced to petition for a Conservatorship of Dad’s person and estate in California, and was advised by my California Attorney that Dad could not leave the state until the court granted an order to do so. That process took nine (9) months, and was my introduction to fraud and exploitation in the world of Elder Care. I felt confident that as soon as I was able to move Dad to Arizona to be closer to me, that I would be able to stop the fraud and exploitation, by his paid care providers. I was wrong. By the time I was able to sell his property it only brought twenty-nine percent (29%) of appraised value. Needless to say, I was left hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for my Father’s care.
Due to my personal experience with the corruption that exists in the Elder Care community, I have made a personal commitment to bring public awareness to the many forms of abuse and exploitation that takes place against our Elders, across our nation. Dad was first abused and exploited by the members of his own family, and since has been victimized by the Elder Care professionals that I hired for his care and protection.
I have learned that greed has no color, no economic status, and no familial barriers. Exploitation can take place for monetary gain from $1.00 to literally hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are only two elements required for fraud and exploitation to thrive; opportunity and availability. Our Elders and their adult children who have turned to the Elder Care Community for support, fit both.
The time has come for America to wake up; to require the same type of accountability from our Elder Care Providers, that we have come to expect when purchasing a home or a car. Only when the bad apples are separated from the good, and the bad exposed, will Elder Care be a profession that can trusted to do what’s right for our parents, our grandparents, and ultimately ourselves.
If YOU were an Elder…….. Would there still be Elder Abuse?
We’ve had E.N.A.F. Have you?
